AI Coaching People

A while ago I made this post on LinkedIn...

I received a comment from a good friend, Dr. Seth Silver:

I thought his comment to be 100% on point.

As this was a conversation regarding the distinction between ‘people skills’ and data-driven decision-making, it got me thinking of the most important leadership and management activity I can think of, COACHING our people.

Specifically, I considered the impact of data-driven AI augmenting or potentially replacing the coaching activity between employees and their managers.

Since I was contemplating a debate on the ability of AI to coach people, I challenged Chat-GPT to weigh in on the subject.

Here’s the conversation I had with GPT after prompting it with both my original post and Seth’s insightful comments:

No disagreements!  I 100% agree that AI can be an amazing tool to make our coaching more effective.

But I was hoping for a debate, so I challenged it to defend data-based, AI decision-making capabilities and prompted it to argue against this point.

Now it was my turn to continue the debate…

I was a little taken aback when I got this response.

Nice!  I won the debate!!  I had to be sure as sometimes GPT is overly agreeable to its human users...

And the response…

Great summary GPT!  Nailed it.

There's a real opportunity to utilize AI tools to enhance the quality and consistency of your coaching.  That said, we need to double down and invest in our HUMAN leadership to continue improving how we coach and support our people.

If we truly want to inform, influence, and INSPIRE our people we need to invest in the coaching of our PEOPLE.  We need coaching that is PREPARED, PRESENTED, and delivered with the intent of catching people doing things - to create opportunities to give meaningful PRAISE.  Inspiration and Praise that's provided by...HUMAN coaches.
